Going Dutch to clean up Sungai Klang
Picture
KLANG: Kelab Warisan Sungai Klang, a non-governmental organisation that champions river-cleaning efforts, hopes that one day the waters of its namesake would be categorised as safe for people to swim in.

Club president Jordan Ng said he wished to see Sungai Klang restored to how it was some 50 years ago, when the water was ideal for body contact.

“We have been actively organising community programmes where effective microorganism (EM) mud balls are thrown into Sungai Klang from the Kota Bridge on a regular basis since our inception. About 1,500 to 2,000 EM mudballs are thrown into the river each time to clean our waterways.

Picture

Picture

Picture

Mud ball clean-up for river
Picture
The public having a try at making mud balls using rice bran, brown sugar and enzyme made from fruit peels.
HUNDREDS of Klangites celebrated National Day with a twist when they tossed about 2,000 effective microorganism (EM) mud balls into the Klang River to clean it up.
The usually quiet Kota Bridge, which is a historic icon in the royal town, was packed with the boisterous crowd that came early for the event, organised by the Klang River Heritage Club in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the bridge.
Tan Chin Leong, 50, from Teluk Pulai, who came to the lower deck of the bridge with his wife and two young daughters, said they had a great weekend outing while learning something new.
“We got to see how the EM mud ball is made and learned what it can do to help us protect our waterways.

“I think this is also a show of our love for the country,” said the self-employed Tan as he held his youngest daughter Jia Jia, two, who was having a whale of a time tossing mud balls into the river.
The event also saw the official opening of the longest and largest mural painted by experienced local artist Ch’ng Beng Hin on a wall under the bridge.
The 63-year-old artist took six months to complete the 6.1m by 21.3m artwork featuring many aspects and attractions of Klang, as he travelled between Kuala Lumpur and Klang a few times a week to teach and to paint.
Selangor senior executive councillor Datuk Teng Chang Khim, who opened the event, lauded the effort and initiative to revive the glory days of Klang River and other historic icons in town.
“The club’s method of working closely with the local council and also corporate sector for the objective should be made benchmark for others.
“With support from the Klang Municipal Council (MPK), their efforts have changed the landscape around the bridge,” he said.
Teng said the old town had long portrayed racial and religious harmony with the early establishment of a mosque, Catholic and Methodist churches, and Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist temples within 500m of Kota Bridge.
MPK president Datuk Mohd Yasid Bidin, who was also present, praised the club’s passion and determination to clean up the river, which was once an unpolluted waterway and the pride of Klang Valley folks.
“It is great to see such overwhelming response to this meaningful event.
“The club’s efforts in cleaning up and beautifying the bridge and its surrounding areas with attractions such as the Love Locks and mural have truly livened up the old town.
“With the EM mud balls, it is our hope that more people will join in the effort to clean up Klang River,” he said, adding that he was thrilled that the murky water in his catfish pool became clearer after the mud balls were thrown into it.
Klang River Heritage Club president Jordan Ng called on more non-governmental organisations, government agencies, and corporate bodies to join in the effort to make more EM mud balls to clean the river together.
“We will continue making the mud balls from time to time to be thrown into the river for the next five years.
“Let us make the Klang River our pride again by giving it a clean new look while celebrating our love for Malaysia,” he said.
Ng also thanked MPK and the sponsors, such as convenience store chain 99 Speedmart, BMS Organics, Banner King among others.

Muddy way to clean Klang River
Picture
KLANG: Concerned residents here have embarked on a project to clean up the Klang River using 1,500 effective microorganism (EM) mud balls.
Numerous trays of mud balls are ready to be thrown into the river, which was once an unpolluted waterway and the pride of Klang Valley folks.
Kelab Warisan Sungai Klang president Jordan Ng said efforts to remove solid wastes from the river were not enough to clean up the river.
“Reviving the Klang River is one of the main objectives of our movement.

“EM mud balls are very easy to make and are widely used to clean polluted waterways because they inhibit the growth of algae and break down any sludge and silt in the water.
“This is our first attempt and we want all Klangites to join us,” Ng told The Star.
The basic ingredients of the EM mud balls are rice bran, brown sugar and an enzyme made from fruit peels, that will take at least 14 days to ferment before they can be used.
Together with the Klang Municipal Council, the club members will organise an event on Aug 19 at the lower deck of the Kota Bridge to throw mud balls into the river and officiate the largest mural in the royal town in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the bridge.
“We are holding the project with the council and various community groups, organisations and schools.
“We hope other local councils and relevant parties will join us to clean up the 120km Klang River, which flows through several districts in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur,” Ng said, adding that more such activities will be organised at different spots of the city in coming months.
Ng added that a cruise along the river may materialise after its clean-up.
“We hope to instil awareness among the people on the need to protect our waterways,” Ng added during the interview.
Lauding the club’s efforts, council president Datuk Mohd Yasid Bidin said such initiatives were most encouraging.
“The water quality and habitat of the Klang River has improved in recent years following various efforts to clean it.
“But we’re hoping and want more efforts to be taken to clean and beautify the river to bring back its glorious days,” he added. to edit.

SINGAPOREANS THROW EFFECTIVE-MICROORGANISM BALLS INTO KLANG RIVER TO HELP CLEAN IT UP
Picture
At first glance the sight of these Singaporeans throwing things into the Klang River is enough to raise eyebrows. Some men and women, even two little children were video-ed tossing ‘something’ into the water as they stood by the river bank. The video was shared by Warisan Sungai Klang on Facebook on 30 July.
Oi as though Klang River not kotor enough already, must add to the pollution? BUT WAIT, don’t marah until you watch the video to the end:

In the video
, a Singaporean wearing sunglasses and grey t-shirt can be heard explaining WHAT they were throwing into the water…
“This is a mud ball and it’s supposed to clean up the Klang River. From Singapore we are here to do our part to help clean up the Klang River. Join us!”
Chup, wouldn’t mud muddy the river, not make it clean? How. Wuut.

So we did some Googling and discovered that mud balls are actually Effective-Microorganism (EM) balls. They are a mix of non-chemical, non-toxic, non-genetically modified and non-pathogenic (read, good microorganisms. This amazeballs technology was developed in Japan in the early 1980s by Professor of horticulture, Dr. Teuro Higa.
Dr. Teruo used the ‘dominance principle’ to explain how it works. There are 3 groups of microorganisms – positive (regeneration), negative (degeneration), and opportunist (regeneration or degeneration). He stated that in every environment (soil, water, air, the human intestine), the ratio of positive and negative is critical, since opportunist microorganisms followed the trend. Therefore, he claimed it was possible to positively influence an environment by supplementing with positive microorganisms.
NAH, BACA:
5 ways you can be a successful Malaysian athleteNow, how does it work in the case of the Klang River? When a ball is introduced to a polluted area, the EM microorganism will immediately begin feeding on organic matter and multiplying, in the process, creating enzymes that curb pollution, according to this somewhat dubious looking site. In short, good microorganisms EAT bad microorganisms.
Dr. Teruo Higa. Image from emrojapan.com
Then we found out there have been a number of instances mud balls were used in Malaysia. In 2009, Penang launched the ‘One million Apologies to Mother Earth’ where people literally made one million mud balls and threw them into the river in Gurney Drive. Over in Sabah, ‘To Earth With Love’ was formed in 2011 and it is active in clean-up efforts on polluted rivers and drains. One of their workshops is teaching people how to make mud balls.
Even businesses and schools CSR-ed with this, where Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa let guest have fun throwing mud balls into drains that lead to the ocean. In Perak, SMK Raja Perempuan students made 400 balls from red earth, EM treated rice water and fermented organic matter, and threw them into Sungai Kinta. Not to mention, we found local mud ball making groups on Facebook.
(Left) Screenshot of KiniTV’s video of mud balls made in Penang and (right) students of SMK Raja Perempuan throwing mud balls into Sungai Kinta
It was reported to be a new fad for cleaning up our polluted waterways back in 2009 by The Star although most of us at CILISOS have not heard of it before.

The mud ball concept has been studied throughout the world but is considered dubious by some and no scientific studies support its main claims or gives any real evidence of the benefits of EM, according to mnsgreenliving.blogspot.my, but we are not sure about the credibility of this blog. At the same time, we are also doubtful of the credibility of the argument for EM la. To tell the truth, we did find research papers on EM, however none that can be considered very substantial and foolproof. So we are hesitant to consider it cold, hard science.
This was acknowledged by Dr. Teruo in a 1994 paper co-authored by him and soil microbiologist James F. Parr. They conclude that “the main limitation…is the problem of reproducibility and lack of consistent results.
On top of that, there are some doubts that EM are able to even survive after being thrown into heavily polluted water, compared to indigenous microorganisms that have had time to gradually adapt there. Plus, a sudden influx of a new species could alter population dynamics and really mess up the ecology in the long run, though some sources say no such thing will happen la. Just some risks and considerations to take note of la.
In water treatment, Egyptian scientists tested it for handling greywater for reuse. This study saw sediment, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biochemical oxygen demand (which reduces oxygen fishes need) reduce after adding EM. The same results were seen in a study with Yamuna wastewater (the river of the Ganges in India).
NAH, BACA:
5 easy-to-read problems with the 11th Malaysia PlanBy people’s account, it has been claimed that Sungai Pinang and Sungai Mas in Penang are said to be less murky and smelly after thousands of mud balls were thrown in, while at Sungai Kelian at Tanjung Bungah there is said to be a transformation after 3 months of mud ball treatment… the metre-thick black sludge that smothered the riverbed has disappeared, leaving behind a sandy bottom.
Sungai Kelian before and after mud ball treatment. Image from Berapit State Assemblyman Lydia Ong’s blog
So perhaps we leave it to people to draw their own conclusion, but one thing’s for sure…

It is not a cure-all for every type of pollution in waterCan those microbes eat this? We didn’t think so! Image from Borneo Post
A word of caution from experts, perhaps it’s best not to fully rely on anecdotal advice without any proper scientific validation. It makes sense that mud balls can improve the microbial balance in the river to make it healthy again (the same reason why people would drink Yakult), but it sure ain’t gonna make synthetic chemicals and litter magically disappear. It is not a cure-all to our river problems.
“This is not the way to solve environmental problems. We’re allowing the river to be polluted, then treat it. The principle of any river rehabilitation is to identify the sources of pollution, then treat the pollution … not treat the pollution after it has gone into the river.” – Datuk Dr. Zaini Ujang, Professor in Environmental Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, The Star
Even if Sungai Kelian has shown positive change for example, the results may not last. What happens once we stop dumping the mudballs, asks Dr. Zaini?

Picture

Cross the bridge to ‘lock’ your love

KLANG: It may not be the most romantic place in town but the 60-year-old Kota Bridge – the only double-decker bridge in South-East Asia – has become the latest place for lovebirds to “lock” their affection for each other.
Couples have been putting up padlocks of various sizes and colours engraved with names or messages of love on a stainless steel panel in the shape of two intertwining hearts. The “love locks” are snapped into place in fence-like metal within the hearts.
Henry Kueh, 32, was seen joining in the fun with his wife, Abbie Chan, 30, and their two-year-old daughter Giselle yesterday.
“Today is Chap Goh Meh, which is also the Chinese Valentine’s Day.

“The lock is also a symbol of our devotion as a family,” he said.
The initiative was started by Kelab Warisan Sungai Klang, an NGO which wants to beautify and promote Kota Bridge as a tourist draw as well as to clean up the Klang River.
Club president Jordan Ng said the love locks section was part of a series of events organised in conjunction with yesterday’s Chap Goh Meh celebration, which also included a run to raise funds for the upkeep of the bridge.
For yesterday and the universal Valentine’s Day on Feb 14, couples could have their love locks engraved with names and customised messages with a minimum RM50 donation to the club’s funds.
“They also receive customised love certificates after putting up their padlocks,” said Ng, adding that Kota Bridge itself is a heritage icon with many stories waiting to be told to visitors.
“We want to promote it as one of the main tourist attractions in the royal town.”
The 500m reinforced-steel truss girder bridge links North and South Klang with the upper deck for heavier vehicles and the bottom level for lighter vehicles and pedestrians.
The club, formed late last year, is also working with the Klang Municipal Council on its proposal to periodically toss effective micro-organism mud balls into the Klang River to minimise pollutants in the water.
Earlier, council president Datuk Yasid Bidin launched the love padlocks section before flagging off the charity run.
Ng said the stainless steel panel was custom-made to withstand the weight of an increasing number of padlocks.
In Paris, city officials removed millions of padlocks fastened to the Pont des Arts pedestrian bridge across the River Seine after part of its railings collapsed in June 2014.
“This is what we want to avoid,” said Ng, adding that new panels can be built at Kota Bridge when the existing one becomes crowded.

NGO organises run for bridge’s upkeep in Klang

PETALING JAYA: Love is an intense feeling that makes us do unbelievable things.
For the members of Warisan Sungai Klang, the love for Klang and the 60-year-old Kota Bridge compelled them to organise a run to raise funds for the bridge’s upkeep, despite facing many obstacles.
“It is special because it is the only double-decker bridge in the whole of South-East Asia and we’d love for it to be one of Klang’s main tourist attractions,” said the NGO’s president, Jordan Ng.
The 500m Kota Bridge links North and South Klang with the upper deck reserved for heavier vehicles while the bottom half is used by lighter vehicles and pedestrians.

One of them was to throw effective microorganism (EM) mud balls into the Klang river to minimise pollutants in the river, to mirror the tradition of throwing oranges or apples in hopes of finding a suitable partner on Chap Goh Meh.
“However, we couldn’t get the council’s approval so it had to be cancelled but that’s a small obstacle,” he said.
This has not dampened Ng’s spirit and his team hopes to put forward the suggestion to the council again because he believes they have collected substantial evidence to prove that it is an effective way to clean up the river.
“If we get it approved, we plan to throw the mud balls into the Klang river every three months in hopes of minimising the pollutants in the water,” he said.
At the run, there is also a reserved section where people can leave love locks as a sign of their affection for each other.
“It’s not only for couples but for families to show their love for each other as well,” he said.
Ng said close to 1,400 people have registered for the run.
Asked what he thought about the modern day Chap Goh Meh celebrations, Ng said it has definitely changed a lot from when he was a single young man.
“Back then, women would throw oranges and men would throw apples in hopes of finding a suitable partner.
“I see it being done less and less these days,” he said.
Ng admitted that he threw apples into the sea when he was single and is now happily married with two children.
“Those years of throwing apples into the sea really paid off,” he quipped.

Picture
